Typical structure of decanter centrifuge drum

The renowned decanter centrifuge, often referred to simply as the 'decanter,' is ingeniously built from fundamental components such as the drum, screw, differential, frame, and cover. During its sophisticated operation, both the drum and screw rotate simultaneously in the same direction but at a carefully controlled differential speed.

Material is fed continuously into the spiral inner cylinder via the feed pipe, where it is swiftly accelerated into the rotating drum. Within this dynamic environment, centrifugal force exerts its powerful influence, compelling denser solid particles to settle on the drum's wall, creating a sedimentary layer. The screw diligently guides the sludge towards the drum cone's end, where it is expertly expelled from the machine through the designated discharge port.

Simultaneously, the lighter liquid phase gracefully forms an inner liquid ring, seamlessly spilling out through the overflow port located at the drum's larger end, eventually exiting the machine through the drain port. This process elegantly achieves efficient two-phase separation of liquid and solid or a comprehensive three-phase separation involving liquid-liquid-solid.
