Typical structure of decanter centrifuge drum

Decanter centrifuge (commonly known as 'decanter') consists primarily of a drum, screw, differential, frame, and cover. The drum and screw rotate in the same direction but at a differential speed, enabling efficient operation.

 

Material is continuously fed into the spiral inner cylinder via the feed pipe, where it is accelerated into the rotating drum. Centrifugal force causes the heavy solid particles to settle on the rotating drum's wall, forming a sediment layer. The screw then persistently pushes the sludge to the end of the drum's cone, where it is expelled through the discharge port.

 

The less dense liquid phase forms an inner liquid ring, continuously overflowing from the drum's big end through the overflow port and exiting the machine via the drain port, achieving efficient liquid-solid two-phase or liquid-liquid-solid three-phase separation.
